SmartOffice - Document Editing App Reviews

Fine if Free

This app is ok if you get it free. I wouldnt pay for it though...now that Microsoft has its own iOS apps for word, excel and PowerPoint.

Mind BLOWN!!!!!!

I used to have 2 separate apps for typing documents and printing. The printing messed up and the typing was hard.... And then I discovered this app! It is purely mind-blowing. Everything I need stylishly jam-packed into just about 25mb!!!!! I give this a 4 out o 5 because at first it was a little bit confusing, but now it all makes sense! I definitely suggest it!

Warning: Not very "smart"

While this is called an "office" it is merely a text editor so theres only that to evaluate. And this text editor opened a legitimate Word docx document, allowed me to edit and save it (as docx), and then when I tried to open it in Word, Word could not open it and said that it was not a Word-compatible document. If it happened the first time theres no need for me to give it another chance. Only way to save that document was to open it again in Smart Office 2, select all and copy, and paste it into a real open or new document within Word. Youve been warned.

Not worth it

Doesnt support Microsoft one Drive. Also is incredibly limited on features. Dont bother downloading it.

A bit flashy, functionality not so good

I found a Word Processing Suite for MS Office documents that was rated worse than this app, but was all-around superior. This app could connect to Dropbox okay, but didnt read Word docs with tables in them correctly. Recommend shoppers keep looking.

Reformatted Margins to its Default

I wanted to explore other word processors and this office suite was free, so I got the app. As soon as I started working with a Word docx, it reformatted the margins to its own default; I think 1". I use Quickoffice, which may not be available any longer, but it accepts whatever margins the doc already has. I prefer Quickoffice and will delete this app.

Ok, needs features

Need to be able to Paste text into blank or any document!

Incompatible with other apps

I had an earlier version that was fine. However this version does not allow one to cut and paste from Smart Office to ANY other program, including Pages, Word, Notes etc… When I contacted the vendor to solve the problem their response was: "You have uncovered a bug. While the contents of the clipboard from a cut/copy from within SO2 is not available outside of SO2, the reverse is not true. You can copy/cut from outside of SO2 and paste into SO2. I observed these behaviors on several devices, with several operating systems, in Word documents, PowerPoint Presentations and Excel spreadsheets. Ill issue a bug report on clipboard behavior, and well try to correct it for the next release. Unfortunately, I cannot give you a time estimate. Thank you for reporting this issue.” Absolutely unacceptable. Copy/Paste is a basic function of all Office software and apps. Until this is corrected DO NOT purchase this app.

Data loss in an app is unacceptable.

Used this app for about six months without much problem except the klunky iTunes method for transferring files to and from your Mac. Probably I should have been backing those files up on a daily basis with a sync folder, but I failed to do that. Mea culpa. Nonetheless, after a couple of intense consulting sessions over the past couple of days, where I recorded crucial data in a .xls file, I was chagrinned when two of those files came up with an error, stating “Cannot open file.” Neither could Excel (2011) repair them. They were toast— full of garbage and gibberish, all original data lost. I think I can restore my iPhone to the most recent backup and potentially recover the damaged documents in part— but not the most recent changes. There’s another wake-up call. Back up your iPhone daily. I was using backup to my Mac, but suddenly the cloud backup is looking really good to me if it can happen on a daily or even six-hour routine. Anyway, back to Smart Office 2: Am I a little peeved at the data loss? Yes. Could I possibly have prevented it by more diligent backups? I goofed. I trusted this app. Mistake. The app’s graphics, and those of the developers website, as well as their epithet, “Artifex” I think tell the story. Their focus is on appearance and the coding side of the operation could use some serious upgrading. If you go to their forums, you will see this phrase quite a lot, “Sorry to hear you are having problems.” Small consolation in the event of loss of crucial data, IMHO. Another thing you’ll see a lot on the forum pages is the admin saying, “You haven’t given us enough data to allow us to address your problem.” (paraphrased). Fair enough, but how about having a simple ticket submission forum where the user is queried for the relevant data, rather than many repetitive forum replies calling out the user’s failure to supply sufficient data? Wouldn’t that be a little less tedious for both admins and users? Reading the forum one could easily get the impression that Artifex doesn’t think much of its users. But maybe I’m just thin-skinned. You have a look there and see what you think of their customer service. Bottom line? Of the many apps I use on iPhone, I’ve not experienced data loss like this which is apparently connected to the app’s not being able to save .xls files accurately. My recommendation? Keep shopping. If you care about your data, and if data loss is going to seriously crimp your style, skip this app. Alternatively, back up any files that it creates or modifies using iTunes and perhaps setting up a sync folder to automatically back up those files. Still, if a few hours pass between iTunes syncs and your document is corrupted, you could be out of luck. Nice graphics and slick, if a little cryptic, UI, Artifex, but beef up your coding and consider user’s data loss an unacceptable event. Tighten it up, show evidence that you have, and maybe someone will be willing to give Smart Office 3 a shot. I don’t think it will be me.

Good but

Works good but, it has a tendency to freeze up almost daily. Have to shut down the iPad and restart to make it work again. Note to others, when it freezes up, Do Not do a reset. A reset will scramble the document you had open and make it unusable. Turn the iPad off, wait a minute and turn it back on again. Also, hit save frequently as you will loose everything since the last save when the program freezes.

Hopelessly Broken "Clipboard" Functionality

Now I see why these people chose to implement "Select All" so badly... its because CLIPBOARD FUNCTIONALITY IS HOPELESSLY BROKEN!!!! You can cut, copy, and paste within the app and it DOES NOT extend outside of the app. I like to use a document editor to write longer comments then copy and paste into another app so I dont lose my text. Well forget with this app because its clipboard is 100% USELESS!!!! ONE STAR!!!! Previous Review: I find it utter flabbergasting that there is no easy to "Select All" from an app that calls itself "Smart". This app cant even be taken seriously lacking the basic fundamental "Select All" feature. This app is "small time"! ONE STAR!!!

Smart office 2

After download, this app request to log in to enter DropBox (which was in grey color), and it didnt respond to press this This App didnt respond and freezes

Current version insanely glitchy

Using this app to edit a document is like playing a very frustrating game. One tap might bring up editing options, or zoom into text, or bring up the keyboard. I cannot select what I want, basic editing functions are hidden or hard to find, and the help docs are almost useless.

Difficult to do some job

1.select a word double tap sometimes not work 2.menu and others not so convenient Check Microsoft Word

Terrific App

Very powerful and flexible. I use it to access my Google Drive and can open any document in any format including MS Office, PDF files etc. Very clever and useful display options as well. Highly recommend this app as a great productivity tool. A must have if you use your iPad for work or just want straightforward and highly capable means of dealing with your documents.

Copy function is not working

On iPad Air 2 iOS 9.1

Does Not appear to be compatible with IOS 9

Since downloading the update to iOS9 this app has stopped working completely. Cant seem to find any way of contacting the software developer either as their website clearly says they dont have time to respond to users. Nice work if you can get it!!!

Beautiful new UI, great features!

With the most recent update, the UI has become slick and pleasing to look at, and the sync Google Drive, Box, and Dropbox are awesome bonuses. Great update!

Very nice update

This update really nice and contemporary. I just want to mention a very important feature for Arabic user that this app is the unique that it display arabic Exile file in its normal view, I means the columns from right to left. So It deserve five stars.

Cant seem to convert word into pdf

The program works other than that. Ive looked through the slides for getting started but Im getting no where. Waste of money.
